This picture shows Station Headquarters, as it was early in 1960. The RAF Ensign was ceremonially hoisted and lowered on the flagpole each day. The area of grass to the left of the picture was later to become the Memorial Garden and contain the original stone memorial to those who died in the Service of their Country between 1939 and 1945. This garden now also contains another commemorative stone and plaque recording the RAF’s time on Gan from 1956 to 1976, as well as two Heavy Gun Barrels retrieved from the shoreline in 1971 and which formed part of the Addu Atolls defences during World War 2. |
